When to come

The dry season runs from about November to April and is also peak season, so hotels and boats fill early, particularly around Christmas and New Year. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain, swell and red-flag days on west-coast beaches. Boat trips still run on many days but can be cancelled at short notice.

Getting around on a hosted trip

Phuket's airport is in the north of the island and the main beaches are well to the south, so transfers take time. Boat days start with a hotel pick-up and a drive to the pier; your itinerary shows the pick-up time the night before.

Filming notes

• Marine national parks charge entry fees; they are covered only if the activity includes them.
• Drone use near airports, national parks and crowded beaches is restricted. Thai drone rules generally require registration and insurance; check the rules for the specific site and date.
• Rip currents are a real risk on west-coast beaches in the monsoon months. Red flags mean no swimming, including for a shot.
• Protect your gear on speedboats: spray is constant and dry bags are not optional.
