Adventure in Thailand is mostly about water and rock: sea canoeing in Phang Nga Bay, speedboats around the Phi Phi Islands, and climbing and longtail boats around Railay in Krabi. In the north, Chiang Mai's mountains offer trekking and waterfalls. Water-based days are most reliable from November to April, outside the Andaman monsoon.

What to plan for

  • Sea state decides boat days: have a land-based back-up day on the Andaman coast.
  • Your travel insurance must cover the activities you plan to do, such as climbing or snorkelling.
  • National park fees are covered only where the activity includes them.
